The THW as employer

The task of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, or Technische Hilfswerk (THW), is to ensure civil protection and disaster relief. As an employer looking to fulfil these duties now and in the future, the THW offers a broad range of career opportunities in diverse working areas, working in a motivated team.

Every day at the THW, its staff are working to create impacts. There are some 2,100 paid employees working to support the volunteer operatives as they conduct their national and international operations.
There are many advantages and benefits to working at the THW, including a national rail pass, numerous opportunities for further training, and the possibility of being appointed as a tenured civil servant. There are other employers who offer similar benefits.

Other factors which characterise the THW include:

  • The THW is actively working to ensure that each staff member is supported on an individual basis to achieve their own professional goals. Supplementary benefits such as remote working also make it easier to take individual circumstances into account.

  • As an employee at the THW, every day is spent supporting volunteers in Germany. This applies whether they are procuring operational materials and logistics, devising marketing to attract new volunteers, or working in HR to find the right people for these jobs. At the THW, everyone is contributing their part to a well-oiled civil protection operation.

  • As an operational organisation, the THW is supporting society, promoting voluntary work in Germany, and creating international connections and cooperation. This wide-ranging work helps the organisation contribute to a social and peaceful way of living together.
