Volunteers

A willingness to help others, openness and togetherness – these are the defining characteristics of THW members. The THW offers an opportunity to help other people in their hour of need and put skills into action for the benefit of others. This assistance can take a wide variety of forms, as THW members roll up their sleeves and help deal with fallen trees, flooding and power cuts, clearing the way or providing drinking water and power. The volunteer operatives also know they can rely on each other.
There are many reasons people choose to volunteer their time at the THW. Some see it as a personal challenge or a unique hobby, and others value the chance to learn new skills. Whatever the primary reason that drew volunteers to the THW, one thing is common: the feeling of having done some good.

No prior skills or knowledge are needed to join the THW. All new members go through professionally run technical training at their local section. This Basic Training also imparts general knowledge about the civil protection system in Germany. After this, participants can take part in certified training courses which teach skills that are useful in life outside the THW, too. Some examples of the skills new operatives learn include illuminating operational areas, securing buildings in danger of collapse, and handling equipment.

The Basic Training takes place in the Local Section and comprises a range of different modules. The training sessions might take place one evening each week, or at weekends.
