Volunteers - everyday life

Volunteering for the THW means a lot more than just taking part in operations. It starts with the community of the local section and is characterised by the time spent together in exercises and training courses.

A THW local section can be seen as the local headquarters, where volunteers spend most of their time. It is where they meet before each deployment, put on their operational clothing and set off for the operation. It is also the place they practice different deployment scenarios to ensure they are prepared for any emergencies.

THW local sections are the storage locations for the comprehensive range of equipment and vehicles needed, and where they are all tested, repaired and maintained on a regular basis. They are also social spaces where volunteers spend time together, share experiences and learn from each other – this social element is as important as the deployments. Training rooms and a kitchen are part of the premises, ensuring the operatives have the spaces they need. Volunteer evenings usually take place weekly and often include an evening meal or refreshments alongside the training, repairs or exercises, ensuring there is time for stories and celebrations. Family members and friends are also welcome.
There are roles and opportunities for people to get involved even if they have not taken part in the training to be an operative. Local sections need administration and organisation, kitchen assistants to cater for the operatives, and skilled help to maintain the equipment and vehicles – so there is plenty to do outside of the deployments themselves. Everyone is welcome at the THW.

When it comes to the deployments, then the trained volunteer operatives spring into action. This might be during working hours, since most operatives are also professionals with jobs. A system is in place that enables them to leave work in order to take part in a deployment: their employer receives compensation for these periods, ensuring the operative continues to be paid in full, even when they are not at work.
