Training

The focus of THW training is to ensure operatives develop the expertise they need to deal with any situation they may face during operations. The training communicates all the opportunities within the THW to them, supports them as individuals, and applies modern methodology and didactics. In this way, the THW ensures its operatives have the operational capability and expertise they need for all deployment scenarios.

The training offered at the THW is always being developed and improved to ensure operatives are taught how to deal with the ever-changing demands of civil protection. In order to help operatives better meet the needs of their job, family and volunteer work, a variety of training formats is on offer. Training courses and exercises take place locally at Local Sections, regionally at the State Associations, and online. There are also three national training centres in the THW in Brandenburg an der Havel, Hoya and Neuhausen.

Before deployment

The basis for successful work during deployments is a comprehensive training. In order to ensure this, every potential operative has to complete a Basic Training before they take part in their first operation. This is when they learn all the foundational skills and knowledge they need to provide assistance during an emergency. Anybody 16 or older can take part in the Basic Training. After completing this, there are further training opportunities, which depend on personal interests and the needs in that region.
