The foundations of all THW training are laid in the Basic Training conducted at every local section. This aims to impart the general theory and practical skills needed by every future THW operative. This includes knowledge about the German and European civil protection system and the THW within this, as well as basic expertise on all of the core tools and equipment used in the THW. This ensures operatives from any local section can take part in deployments anywhere in Germany. THW vehicles and equipment are modular and consistent across Germany, so the practical training is, too.
The Basic Training is the first level of training at the THW and is completed by passing both a theoretical and practical test. Only then are operatives assigned to particular units or specialist units within the THW, which may involve further specialist training. There is also the option of an ‘Adapted Basic Training’ with a purely theoretical format. This enables people with physical disabilities to contribute to the THW, as well as other people who wish to take on roles which do not involve the technical operations.
Generally, the THW Basic Training takes place over a period of several months, involving one training module per week. However, some locations do offer the chance to complete the training in a shorter, more compact format.
